“The media are undoubtedly the major contemporary means of cultural expression and communication: to become an active participant in public life necessarily involves making use of the modern media.” (Buckingham 2003:5)
‘Children and the media’ is a growing concern for everybody. Even very young children in our society get a big daily dose of television. video games and music lyrics. Parents complain that their children are now a days addict to media. Hence we must do something for this situation. Hence the creative film making project of MMS.
While such media can provide education and entertainment, they can also damage children. Research shows that exposure to violent media can result in aggressive attitudes and violent behaviour in some children and adolescents.
For centuries, literacy has referred to the ability to read and write. Today, we get most of our information through an interwoven system of media technologies. The ability to read many types of media has become an essential skill for children in the 21st Century.
Media literacy is the ability to access, analyse, evaluate, and create media.
Educational Media Unit of RICE MMS (EMU) is the latest addition to our school to help children to understand the media and to focus them to a positive media approach. We are in the process of developing a curriculum for media education for school children. At the moment children are helped in the photography skills. This is an after school programme.
